Today my mom turns 50. Fifty! Like Sally O'Malley, am I right? Look it up.
Probably the most awesome thing she did for me this year was help me transition into motherhood. When I was in the hospital, she came and lifted my spirits when I needed it. When we came home with a newborn, she stayed with us and made freezer meals and helped get stuff cleaned (we were mid-kitchen-remodel at that point, so everything was super dusty). She woke up with him at night so I could try to rest and recover from surgery. She's so service-oriented.
We recently had a conversation that concluded with "nobody knows how to be a mom." We're all figuring it out as we go along, and every woman is different, and every baby is different, and there are a million ways to parent. I think most women, including myself, tend to gravitate towards parenting methods that were used successfully on themselves. Meaning you eventually become your mother.
There's no one better to become, in my case. Happy birthday, Mama!
